Sorting out toys and educational resources in Accra for distribution.


EDT-Africa children relies on the donations which are sorted out and distributed where it's impact would be most effective.

In October 2009, with the help of volunteers in Accra, items were sorted out for distribution in various regions of Ghana.

One of the recipients being the Gyangyanaase Local Authority primary school.

Nkoranza South Assembly to prioritise education

Mr. Raymond Gbedoah, Nkoranza South District Coordinating Director, says the District Assembly would place high premium on educational activities and programmes in the communities.

He advised the youth to take their education seriously in order to contribute meaningfully to the development of Brong-Ahafo and the country in general.

Mr. Gbedoah was speaking at a capacity building workshop for members of the Nkoranza South District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) at Nkoranza at the weekend.

It was organised by Partnership for Accountable Governance in Education (PAGE), a United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-sponsored project, being implemented by CARE International and Ghana Education Service (GES).

Mr. Gbedoah commended USAID for adopting the district to benefit from the PAGE project to help improve educational standards.

Mr. Kwadwo Owusu-Ansah, a resource person of PAGE project, advised politicians to avoid politicizing educational policies and programmes, which he said could have an adverse effect on the country’s education.

He said the DEOC was a non-partisan organisation and that the Assemblies should not be selective in choosing members to serve on the committee.

Mr Owusu-Ansah, who is also head of the education management information system at Mamponteng district of the Ashanti region, disclosed that the DEOC was established under the legal instrument of the Education Act 1995, hence members should not be appointed on partisan basis.

He asked the DEOC members to be committed and dedicated to their service and responsibilities and to work as a team to initiate activities that would enhance education development in the district.

The resource person called on members to help in the demarcation and proper documentation of all school lands to prevent encroachment on building plots.

The Nkoranza South District Director of Education, Madam Philippa Banson, commended the DEOC for its assistance in education delivery.

Resources for early years - Fante version

Some of the resources designed for Fante-speaking communities in Ghana.
Most Fantes come from the Central or Western Region in the south-western part of Ghana.
They are called Akans.
Inheritance and succession to public office is mostly by matrilineal descent.
In the rural areas, the main occupations are fishing and farming.
Sankor and Gyangyanaase are coastal villages near Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana.

Our visit to Sankor Baptist Academy

Statistics for children of ages 0+ - 6years

Creche: 0+ - 11/2 years = 12 children
Nursery: 2 - 3years = 25 children
KG 1: 3 - 5years = 40 children
KG 2: 4 - 6years = 26 children

There are 14 teachers in this school with varied qualifications.
These include; teacher trained, technical trained, School certificate leavers, undergraduates and those who have attended sandwich courses.

Sankor Baptist's headmistress said they noted the importance of workshops, seminars, refresher courses and ICT to help them in heir support of the children's learning and development.

EDT-Africa is planning a series of short courses for the school before the end of 2011.

Two teachers teach six classes at Pramkuma

Pramkuma (E/R), July 8, GNA - Only two teachers are teaching the pupil= s from classes one to six of Pramkuma L/A Primary School, Mr Alfred Owusu, Assemblyman for Pramkuma, said on Thursday.

Unfortunately one of them is leaving to pursue further studies next academic year, leaving the burden to a sole teacher, he said. Mr Owusu disclosed this when the Kwaebibirem District Chief Executive, Mr Reginald Aboagye Osae and his team visited the town as part of his familiarization tour of the district.

The Assemblyman and the Abusuapaning of the community, Opanin Gyabour Akrowiah, therefore appealed for more teachers, public place of convenience and a football park for the school.

The District Development Planning Officer, Mr Alex Asare, promised tha= t teachers would be posted to the school but meanwhile qualified young men an= d women from the town could be employed under the National Youth Employment Scheme to teach at the school. He said since the assembly had a grader, a school park would be constructed and the school would be supplied with desks. At Kwamang, the Chief, Nana Pobi Asamaning, said the community was building a three-unit classroom block for the Catholic school and needed about 80 bags of cement to complete it. The DCE said public place of convenience was vital if sanitation was t= o be improved and assured the people that the assembly would build one for them. Mr Osae called for peace and unity to facilitate development in the town and urged the people to actively participate in communal labour.

5000 schools under trees across the country

Accra, July 6, GNA- Education Minister, Mrs Betty Mould Iddrisu, on Wednesday said a total of five thousand schools hold classes under trees across the country.

"The ministry in its efforts to eradicate schools under trees in the country has collated a list of such schools in the country for action," he said.

She said the government awarded a contract for the construction of permanent classroom blocks for 1,305 under tree schools under the 'No Under Tree Projects' across the country adding, these projects were at various stages of completion.

She indicated that the projects were being funded from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and the rest from the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) resources.



Answering questions on the floor of Parliament, the minister said her ministry had elaborate plans to provide facilities to the Senior High Schools (SHS) to accommodate the fourth year group.

The response was in response to a question posed by Mr Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, NPP member for Asante Akim North, who wanted to know government's plans of accommodating the fourth year students of the S.H S. Mrs Iddrisu said as the first phase of the programme to meet these requirements, contracts had been warded for the construction of classroom blocks in 214 schools.

She noted that 137 SHSs would benefit from quick build structures and arrangements had been made to contract the Ghana Armed Forces to provide 6 units classroom blocks in 21 SHS.

The ministry, she stated, had also awarded contracts for the construction of the 55 No 2-Storey dormitory blocks as the first phase of the provision of dormitory blocks adding, all these structures would be provided with furniture.

EDT-Africa began operations in Ghana in 2001.

Over the past 10 years we have operated in Kwahinkrom, a small village of approximately 500 inhabitants in the Central Region of Ghana.
The success of this model has inspired EDT-Africa to replicate this in other rural and suburban settings like Kwabeng, Sankor, Gyangyanaase, La and Madina.

In 2008 we began operations in Kwabeng, Eastern Region.

In 2010 we officially expanded to Sankor and Gyangyanaase near Winneba in the Central Region.

We have also began projects in Madina and La in the Greater Accra Region.

EDT-Africa has through education and training, initiated various self-help projects  most of which are on-going.
This has greatly impacted the livelihoods of the people in the mostly rural communities we work in.
